The Rabbids crossover games and Captain Toad show that style can look gorgeous in HD. I’d love to see more modern takes on its isometric 3D graphics. No enemy threat from the sequels has managed to feel so alien to the Mario setting-including the literal aliens! There’s a lot of the series’s trademark JRPG parody 4th wall-breaking humor, but the tone can get pretty dark at times and the story sells the Smithy Gang as this invasive force from the moment an enormous sword jams itself into the middle of your standard “Mario rescues Peach from Bowser” plot in the opening. Timed Hits and Defense weren’t quite fleshed out to where you could dodge everything (or where it was always obvious what COULD be dodged) and there were repeat Action Commands across characters. It’s the only entry to sport a traditional party system with 3 members in battle you can swap from 5 options (except Mario who’s mandatory).
Super Mario RPG for the SNES has a way different vibe, appearance, and even gameplay to some extent than either Mario & Luigi or Paper Mario. In dreamland 1 its a straight foward, defeat the greedy King, story with no twists. Id even say from a story stand point, every kirby after tends to have a darker undercurrent to its story when at the end Kirby has to fight an evil dark entity. Kirby’s Dreamland 1 id say also has a different vibe due to it having no powerups, its way more straight foward and simple Also the entire area it takes place feels very interconnected, even metroid like.although the mission based structure is at odds with that lol Id also say dmc 1, it does have over the top momenta youd see in later games but the overall vibe gave it a more gothic horror atmosphere.even of Dante ks basicalt the horror the way how he slices thru enemies loool. It realy felt alot like a Disney x FF crossover compared to later games The game is cheesy as heck but yet its so sincere about its power of friendship message that it ends up being endearing.
